Shanaye Jeffers is the Philadelphia site director of a nonprofit called Daughters of the Diaspora, which aims to teach young black girls about self esteem and reproductive health through a culturally specific curriculum. This story is part of Made In Philly , a series about young residents shaping local communities. When Shanaye Jeffers was in fourth grade, she often skipped touch football and double-dutch jump rope at recess to read a book on puberty. In fifth grade, she jumped at the chance to do a school project on childbirth. By the time Jeffers got her period in sixth grade, she was already well-versed in reproductive health.

Since the numbers are even, everyone can find a partner. But what happens if you take away one man? You might not think this would make much difference. With 20 women pursuing 19 men, one woman faces the prospect of spinsterhood. So she ups her game. Perhaps she dresses more seductively. Perhaps she makes an extra effort to be obliging.

Motivations of low-income substance using heterosexual Black women in New York City for having multiple sexual partners are explored in this paper. Individual-level motivations for extra relational sex fell into four dominant themes: sexual pleasure, partner infidelity, sex exchange and past main partners. Using a Black feminist framework, we describe how participants displayed considerable autonomy by actively forming and withdrawing from sexual relationships with men. However, women described low rates of condom use with main partners and inconsistent use of condoms with more casual sexual partners.
I had been with my partner for six years when she announced, abruptly, that it was over. I remember she was crying. I was not: I was too stunned. It was as if, in the rulebook of how to end a relationship, she had torn out the last chapter. Disagreements, rows, eating meals in silence, sleeping in separate rooms: these things were all missing from our end sequence.
